Each State of Australia currently have different Testing and Tagging legislation, Queensland’s legislation is driven by the QLD Electrical Safety Act 2002 and QLD Electrical Safety Regulations 2013.


Specified electrical equipment and safety switches must be tested in accordance with the intervals determined by the specific class of work.

  • At least every 3 months by a competent person
  • Use the inbuilt test button (At least monthly)
  • Operating time/ current test by a competent person (At least annually)

Manufacturing
  • Double Insulated – At least every 12 months by a competent person
  • Not Double Insulated – At least every 6 months by a competent person and connected to a safety switch
  • Use inbuilt test button (At least every 6 months)
  • Operating time/ current test by a competent person (At least annually)
  • Inbuilt test button (Daily or before each use, which ever is longer)
  • By a competent person at least annually

Effective 1 March 2008, portable safety switches are not to be used in manufacturing work

Service Work
  • At lease annually by a competent person or connected to a safety switch
  • Use inbuilt test button (At least every 6 months)
  • Operating time/ current test by a competent person (At least annually)
  • Longer test intervals may apply
  • Inbuilt test button (At least every 3 months or before each use, whichever is longer)
  • Operating time/ current test by a competent person (At least annually)
  • Longer test intervals may apply
Office Work
  • At least 5 yearly by a competent person or connected to a safety switch
  • Use inbuilt test button (At least every 6 months)
  • Operating time/ current test by a competent person (At least every 2 years)
  • Inbuilt test button (At least every 3 months)
  • Operating time/ current test by a competent person (At least every 2 years)
Amusement Work – Electrical Equipment
  • Double Insulated – At least annually by a competent person

  • Inspected and tested each after onsite assembly, and every 6 months
Rural Industry Work – All Plug Equipment
  • Visual examination before each use
Rural Industry Work – Electrical Equipment used under stated electrical risk factors
  • Test and inspected every 12 months or protected with a safety switch
  • Recommended push button test every 3 months
  • Recommended push button test every 3 months
